Allerton Bywater is the second Millennium Community, Greenwich being the first, which comprises of the reclamation of the former pit at the heart of Allerton Bywater. The regeneration enabling works have been facilitated through English Partnerships.
PRA were commissioned by Miller Homes, working alongside English Partnerships and CABE, to prepare the detailed design of 176 houses and 21 apartments, as the first phase of the residential elements of the development.
The completed proposal includes a fully contained home zone setting which enhances the scale and rhythm of the innovative housing development (contemporary/ vernacular), achieving Eco Homes excellent standard. The design of the layout enables pedestrian to have priority of over the car and 'reclaims the streets by design'.
In response to sustainability the opportunity, for some of the residents to work from home was given careful consideration and from this, the atelier garage concept evolved. This comprises of a detached garage with studio workspace over, located at the bottom of the garden to ensure a separation between work and home life.
